Hare & Copper Eatery is a shared landed dream between husband and wife team, Andrew Wood executive chef and Liliana Calva operations manager.

Andrew’s first introduction into the culinary world was as a kitchen hand working for pocket money at the age of 14. Graduating as the top student from Weltec Polytechnic Chef School in Wellington, Andrew has spent the last 20 years working his way up in a number of different kitchens in the Hawke’s Bay, Melbourne and most recently Wellington where his last job was as Head chef of El Matador Café, Asador Grill and Bar on colourful Cuba St. in Wellington. From well-known cafes, bistros and fine dining restaurants, Andrew has a broad range of skills and experience.

Born and raised in Mexico, Liliana studied Tourism and after graduation she stepped into the international hospitality industry. From a participant in the Cultural Representative Programme at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, to arriving to New Zealand in 2011, she has over 10 years’ experience in the industry. She has spent the last 7 years working in the Wellington hospitality scene. From head of front of house, bar manager of El Matador, and event coordinator of Wellington Hospitality Group or Corporate Supervisor in massive events at the Westpac Stadium, she’s done it all.

After having their daughter Emilia in 2017, Andrew and Liliana were drawn to the idea of moving their young family out of the city. Over the years the couple has spent a lot of time in the Central North Island and know Lake Taupo well, with Andrew’s family owning a bach in Kuratau. Searching for a new life opportunity, Turangi popped up on their radar and it didn’t take long for the couple to find the perfect location.

Andrew and Liliana have taken over what used to be River Vineyard and Restaurant. They intend to bring back to life what the locals and previous customers describe as “the perfect spot to hang out”.

Their vision is to offer a great range of food and beverages people can enjoy in a beautiful setting, with exceptional customer service to ensure they have a truly memorable experience.
